6 weeks done 46 to go in 20201
We are 6 weeks into 2021. How are you doing?
- Battle weary over non-stop political wrangling
- Tired of the drama of perpetual impeachment of a popular president (regardless of whether you personally liked him/hated him)
- Ready for getting on with your life and over lockdown due to Covid-19?
- Too stressed to bother with a New Years' resolution list and instead stayed home and drank while watching re-runs of Twilight Zone?
I know I am ready to kick 2021 to the curb and start fresh. To be able to go to the store and not worry about catching a deadly disease. To not having to second guess whether going for an annual physical, eye exam or dental cleaning might get me sick. And I am especially tired of the political wrangling over who is more important and should get the vaccine first.
In the 1917-1918 swine flu pandemic, there was no drama. People were grateful that a vaccine was available and waited their turn. The government delivered the vaccine without commentary. The most vulnerable populations received the vaccine first and more importantly, it was delivered to all without drama.
I am not suggesting I want to go back to the early 1900s. Times were very tough back then. However, people were more tolerant and accepting of everyone.
And no I do not have on blinders about the aftermath of the civil war. However, despite the civil war, United States citizens generally accepted the outcome of the war and went about their daily lives.
Statues, monuments, and other tributes were erected around the country, some to commemorate those who won the civil war and others as reminders of what we needed to never allow to happen again.
What is very distressing to me is the number of people, especially young people, who have embarked on a cancel culture campaign. ” Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” George Santayana
This I believe in my bones. If Americans cannot let go of this animosity with the us versus them, and us could be:
- republican and them democrat
- Old and them young
- Nursing home patient and anyone in good health
I could go on but you get the idea. I think Rodney King said it best back in 1992 “Why can’t we all just get along?”
In conclusion, how are you doing? Are you helping others or are you condemning them for being different than you?
Think carefully. And if you don’t like what you see in the mirror it is not too late to change.
I believe in you!
